Protect your employees and your business with professional fire extinguisher training from Homer Fire Protection. Our training programs combine classroom instruction with hands-on practice so your staff knows exactly how to respond when seconds count. We serve businesses throughout Northern Virginia, Maryland, and the Washington, DC metro area.

Classroom Instruction

Our classroom training sessions give your team the knowledge they need to respond confidently to a fire emergency. Instruction covers fire science fundamentals, the different classes of fire (Class A, B, C, D, and K), how to identify the correct extinguisher type for each hazard, and when it is safe to fight a fire versus when to evacuate. Every session includes a thorough review of the PASS technique (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep) and your responsibilities under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157, NFPA 10, and applicable Virginia, Maryland, and DC fire codes.

Hands-On Practice

Reading about fire safety is not the same as doing it. Our hands-on training component lets your employees physically handle fire extinguishers in a controlled setting. Participants practice pulling the pin, aiming the nozzle, squeezing the handle, and sweeping at the base of a simulated fire target. This builds the muscle memory and confidence your team needs to act quickly and correctly during a real emergency. No live fire is used, ensuring a safe training environment for all participants.

Compliance Standards We Cover

Our fire extinguisher training programs are designed to meet the requirements of multiple fire safety standards and regulations. Every session addresses compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157, which requires employers to provide fire extinguisher training to designated employees upon initial assignment and at least annually thereafter. Training also aligns with NFPA 10 (Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers) educational requirements and local fire code mandates enforced by fire marshals in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.

Who Needs Fire Extinguisher Training?

If your business has fire extinguishers on the premises, OSHA requires that employees designated to use them receive proper training. This applies to offices, warehouses, retail stores, restaurants, commercial kitchens, industrial facilities, schools, healthcare facilities, property management companies, and any other commercial operation in Northern Virginia, Maryland, or DC. Even if employees are not designated to fight fires, OSHA requires that they receive instruction on evacuation procedures and the general principles of fire extinguisher use.

Fire Extinguisher Training FAQs

How often is fire extinguisher training required by OSHA?

Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157, employers must provide fire extinguisher training to designated employees at the time of initial assignment and at least once per year after that. Annual refresher training keeps your team current on proper technique, new equipment, and any changes to your facility layout or fire hazards.

What is the PASS method for using a fire extinguisher?

PASS stands for Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep. Pull the pin to unlock the extinguisher. Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire, not the flames. Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent. Sweep the nozzle side to side across the base of the fire until it is fully extinguished. This technique is covered in detail during both the classroom and hands-on portions of our training.

Do you provide fire extinguisher training on-site at our location?

Yes. Homer Fire Protection conducts fire extinguisher training at your facility throughout Northern Virginia, Maryland, and the DC metro area. On-site training allows us to use your actual extinguishers, address your specific fire hazards, and train your employees in the environment where they work. We schedule sessions around your business hours to minimize disruption.
